One of the top items of our list of things to do while in
Italy was to go hiking. There is a hike in Cinque Terre that takes you to five
different villages. Unfortunately a couple of the trails were closed, but we
were not to be deterred . When we arrived at the hotel we asked Andrea,
the owner of the hotel about the hike. Andrea is a very pleasant man, who knows
everyone’s business and insists you do things his way. He said he would give us the information at 10:00 the next morning. However, the train we needed to take to get
to the starting point of the hike left at 9:29. This led us to believe he didn’t
think we should do the hike. we approached him early and once
again asked for information about the hike. He explained
that since the trails were closed we would need to take a train or boat to the
second village. The only other way would
be to go around the village and that was straight up and straight down. In a very stern voice said “do not go that
way, you might get yourself in a pickle”.
So you know which way we went. All day
we kept reminding each other to be careful because we didn’t want t to get in a
pickle and have Andrea angry with us. I
don’t think he would have been emphatic about it, if the first time he met, I
hadn’t missed the last step and literally fell into his hotel lobby.
